A French-Canadian Genealogy Blog

I travelled to Montreal, Quebec in September 2021.  Some of my ancestors lived on Île de Montreal for almost 200 years.  This was my first trip to Quebec to make ancestral footprints and the week I spent in Montreal went by very quickly.  

In Lachine (a borough of the city of Montreal) my footsteps were made along the Saint Lawrence River from the Fur Trade National historic site to the homestead site of Francois Meloche, my 6th great grandfather, a distance of about 5km.  

In Montreal, my footsteps included a visit to the Pointe-a-Calliere Museum which has a wonderful exhibit on the founding of Montreal and its history over the centuries.  The Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum and Chapel inspired me to trace her footsteps around old Montreal, with the knowledge that my ancestress Jeanne Loisel who married my 8th great grandfather Jean Beauchamp had been one of her first students.  I also spent time at Chateau Ramezay which is another museum that documents more than 500 years of Montreal history.  Research visits were also made to BAnQ Bibliotheque and BAnQ Vieux-Montreal.  I was able to search the Parchemin database and obtain more than 200 notary extracts relevant to my ancestry.  

The last location that I was able to visit was to Point-Aux-Trembles which is now part of the large city of Montreal.  A large part of my time here was spent at their history museum which has numerous display billboards and a model of the fort built there in the late 17th Century.
