Ancestral Family Footprints

INTERNET SITES

There are of course many, many internet sites with genealogical and family history information.  For the novice Canadian family historian, a great website that lists links to many great resources is Can Genealogy prepared by David Obee (a noted journalist and genealogical researcher) together with many volunteers.  You can select the Province you wish to focus on.  There are numerous links for: Census; Birth/Marriage/Death; Geography and Land; Newspapers; Tanguay Dictionary; Genealogical Societies.

If you have Quebec ancestry it is possible to trace your roots from the 17th to 20th century in a few hours using this website.  In my opinion Genealogy Quebec is a superior resource for a very reasonable subscription price.

In addition to Western Canadian Francophone and Metis heritage resources, this website has a large database with transcripts of voyageur contracts.

If you would like to research possible voyageurs in your ancestry here is the link to the voyageur database -search by your ancestor’s surname.

FamilySearch is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping all people discover their family story.  Their website is free.

The Family Trees are built using a collaborative approach, anyone can add records or revise existing ones.  The belief is that the more people you have working on your Family Tree the faster it will grow and eventually the more accurate it will be.

Here is my opinion and views on this approach: To maintain accuracy in a global family tree requires that we work together and examine and verify each other’s efforts.  Sometimes inaccurate or incorrect entries are made when an inexperienced family historian is overly exuberant with this new activity. Unfortunately, corrections are not always made.  So caution is required.  If you review the records and they appear inconsistent or you have questions about them, you will want to look at other records and other sources and verify the information.  Ideally, you would then correct the work that others have placed on this site.

In addition to the family trees on this website there is a wealth of information about how to research your family history either using online resources, visiting a family history center or the library or actually going to the world renowned family history library at Salt Lake City.  Millions of historical records are also available online on the website.
